When we enter an on-line community it is no different from entering a room full of friends or potential industry contacts. People sometimes tend to forget that on the inter-net and often let their guard down. freedom of speech is a good thing but rudness, prejudice or arrogance is a no go area. it's amazing the amount of people that tarnish themselves and print garbage in the heat of the moment. In the real world heated arguments are perhaps forgotten the next day but on the inter-net it's engraved in stone for all to see, sometimes indefinitely.

Spam gives the wrong impression for sure, it's annoying and in most cases ineffective. The best way to get a message across is a well written article or blog, if news is interesting enough people would want to read it anyway. Social media is about sharing and broadening ones horizon, meeting new like minded people and contacts. Starting with friends and associates that already have a strong relationship with one another makes for a sturdy foundation on any on-line community.
